WHY CHOOSING YOUR WEDDING SINGER IS A LOT LIKE BUYING A MATTRESS...
Are you currently in the market for wedding singer? If so, let me tell you something, it’s not just about the music. In my honest opinion as a wedding singer, finding your right musical fit should go far beyond set lists and price tags. Of course these are important factors, and I'd never advise couples to go outside of their budget if it does not allow! But because your wedding singer is one of the only suppliers who is actually there with you on your big day itself, you should also need to feel like they’re invested in you as much as you are in them!
And weirdly enough… this was reinforced lately when I went shopping... for a mattress.
STAY WITH ME ON THIS!
Recently, me and my boyfriend went on the hunt for a new mattress. Big purchase, right? As novices, this is honestly, the closest we've ever come to the scale of decision making that goes into planning a wedding!
On the afternoon in question, we took off our shoes and took our research seriously. Hopping from mattress to mattress, testing different options. (Turns out we're both soft side sleepers in case you were wondering). After a couple of hours, we faced a dilemma. Having narrowed it down to two products in two neighbouring, competing shops. On paper it was basically a tie. Both mattresses were great quality, comfy as hell, within our budget, and ticked all the boxes. (Sound familiar?)
Enter sales assistant, Steve...
Shops A's friendly, approachable, knowledgeable, staff member who genuinely seemed to care that we found the right fit for us. Shop B's staff, were still friendly enough but it was pretty clear that they were just "going through the motions" to make the sale. They didn't even ask our name!
Steve offered us a cup of tea.
And despite shop B's product actually being a tad cheaper. Guess which shop we purchased from...?
Okay, so what does this have to do with booking a Wedding Singer? Well, similarly to our retail adventures, during your wedding planning process, you might find several singers who stack up similar. All with great voices, perform the music genres you like, are within budget, and have impressive reviews. But when it comes down to it, it's worth taking note, your experience with them. How have they made you feel?
Do they understand your vision and your vibe as a couple?
Do they ask you questions?
Do they communicate in a timely manner?
Do you feel like you get along?
Do you feel like you can trust them to be there for you on one of the most important days of your life?
Because your wedding singer isn’t just a supplier you pay, get the end result/product and then forget about. A wedding singer, is their product. They’re someone who’ll be there, on your day with you, not only celebrating but creating those life-long moments! So I'd say it's pretty important that they "get you" as much as they sell themselves.
Of course, not every couple feels this way. Some people, understandably, with everything else going on in wedding planning, just want to focus on the music, ergo the end result. But from my experience performing at weddings, these days can feel huge. They’re not part of most people’s everyday routine, they’re a one-off, emotional event, and they usually come with plenty of nerves. Having a familiar, smiley, reliable, personable and professional face there with you can make all the difference.

So with this in mind, my ethos as a wedding singer has always been to be approachable, friendly, and supportive. Steve the sales assistant just reminded me what it feels like to be on the other side! Whether you’re the couple who loves regular email check-ins, or the couple who prefers to keep things laid-back and casual, my role your wedding singer, is also, to adapt to you. And I truly believe that this should be the case for all wedding suppliers. (And mattress sales staff!)
My advice to you wedding planning couples, is to try and find your own "Steve's". The people you gel with, who could almost feel like an extra guests on your day, but also have their professional attire together. I promise, you'll sleep better knowing that you purchased from the right supplier!
Btw, if you're looking for a wedding singer who will make you feel as comfortable as, I don't know.. a boujiee Dream's mattress. My name is Abbi-Kaye (AKA Viva la Vintage) and I help my couples to create their perfect vintage vibing wedding day soundtrack.
Fancy a brew?
